Photoshop Generative Fill: Best Practices and Tips for 2026
How Generative Fill Works
Select an area with any selection tool then click Generative Fill in the contextual taskbar. Type a text prompt describing what you want to generate or leave the prompt empty to let the AI fill based on surrounding context. Photoshop generates three variations by default each on a non-destructive generative layer.
Writing Effective Prompts
Be specific and descriptive. Instead of typing just trees describe what you want: tall pine trees with snow on branches against an overcast sky. Include lighting direction style references and material descriptions for better results.
Extending Backgrounds
One of the most practical uses is extending image backgrounds. Expand the canvas select the empty area and run Generative Fill with an empty prompt. The AI seamlessly extends the existing background for adapting images to different aspect ratios.
Removing Objects
Select the unwanted object and run Generative Fill with an empty prompt. The AI replaces the object with contextually appropriate content. For complex removals work in stages removing objects one at a time.
